Top Dressings for Soil
A top dressing is an application of material around a plant that can provide additional nutrients or helps to retain moisture.
Peat or Compost
Add to the soil to provide a steady supply of nutrients.
Sand, Loam and Peat
Add to the surface of lawns to improve aeration (find out more here....)
Gravel or Grit
Add to the compost surface of plants in beds and containers. This improves surface drainage and prevents growth of mosses or lichens on the soil surface. It also provides a decorative effect. A top-dressing of gravel or grit is particularly useful for low-growing plants such as alpines which may be sensitive to excess moisture.
