Garden Loppers & Garden Pruners
Loppers (or long-handled pruners) extend your reach and give you improved cutting leverage, making them useful for removing small branches and stems that would be too thick for secateurs to cut, or for cutting through thinner branches that are difficult to reach. As they are usually operated by holding them at full stretch or above the head, you must ensure that their weight and balance allow you to use them easily and without strain.
Their long handles are usually made from wood or plastic-covered metal, whilst the blades are made from stainless steel, carbon steel or coated steel. Make sure that you dry the blades carefully after use and then wipe them over with an oily rag to keep them in good working condition.
Tree pruners may also be used for cutting small branches up to 2.5 cm (1 in) thick. They have a hooked end which may be lowered over the branch to be cut, and a carbon steel blade that can be operated by a lever. The pole is usually 2-5 m (6-15 ft) long; however, there are also telescopic versions available that will make storage much more convenient.
