Using Trees in Containers

Introducing trees grown in large pots or tubs to a patio, courtyard or rooftop garden can instantly transform it, adding height and structure to the design and creating a well-established appearance. Containers are also a useful way to grow tender trees so that they may be displayed outdoors in summer and moved to a frost-free place as winter approaches.

Always make sure that the tree container is attractive and durable, as the tree will become a long-term feature. There is a huge variety of materials and styles available, including wooden half-barrels, terracotta, and stone or reconstituted stone pots. If you plan to keep the containerized tree out during the winter, make sure the pot is frost-proof.
