Creating a Complex Topiary Shape
Complex topiary designs can be created using ready made metal frameworks, or by making your own form with sturdy materials such as heavy-duty fencing wire. You can then intertwine thin-gauge wire or chicken wire to form a more precise shape.
Using Established Plants
When using an established hedge or tree, place the frame over the plant, clipping as necessary to keep it within the framework. The plant should be clipped once a year, following the outline of the framework and pinching out shoots to encourage bushy growth. After a few years, the plant will fill the framework - clip regularly to maintain the precise outline of the design.
Using Young Plants
If you are training up a young plant to create a topiary shape, follow the initial guidelines for creating a simple shape. You will need to bear in mind that young shoots grow quickly, and so you will need to spend a fair amount of time tying in new shoots throughout the growing season. The shoots should be tied in when they are young and flexible. Check that previous ties have not broken or are rubbing or restricting the shoots. You may find it useful to use tarred twine to tie in the shoots as this will rot away after a few years. You should also ensure that any stakes or canes you have used are still firm; replace any that are cracked or bent with new ones.
