Creating a Slope

It is often preferable to have a lawn that gently slopes away from the house or patio, as this will improve drainage and ensure that water does not drain into the foundations.

Method

To create a slope, you will need to employ a technique similar to levelling; however, each successive row of pegs should be marked farther up or down to form a sloping grid. For example, to create a gradient of 1:100, you should make the marks on each row of pegs successively lower by 1/100 of the distance between the rows - that is, 10 mm per metre.

Do bear in mind that if the lawn slopes down towards the house, you will need to install a drain or soakaway to prevent water from reaching the house.
