Protecting Young Plants
Once planted out, the young annuals or biennials may need a certain amount of protection and support.
Using Peastick Supports
Slender-stemmed or tall annuals will certainly need support; this can be achieved by carefully inserting thin twigs or peasticks into the soil around them. Ensure that the supports are slightly shorter than the ultimate height of the plants so that they will be hidden when the plants reach their mature size. These supports will also help protect the seedlings from possible bird and rodent damage.
Using Netting
Alternatively, you could stretch wire netting with a mesh no greater than 2.5 cm (1 in) over the bed, bending it down at the edges so it does not touch the plants. Secure it firmly with a stick or wire pin. The plants can then grow up through the netting and cover the mesh when fully grown.
