Mechanical Control of Weeds
Mechanical aids may be brought in to help win the war against weeds. Rotavators (rotary cultivators) are suitable for dealing with annual weeds in unplanted areas and between rows of vegetables. However, they should never be used where perennial weeds are growing, as they will simply chop up the roots and distribute them across the area, where they will multiply as new plants. If you intend to use a rotovator for an area that contains perennial weeds, treat them with a weedkiller or a solid mulch for two years to kill them before rotavation.
A flame gun is a useful alternative to weedkillers, and may be used in areas such as paths and paving. However, do take great care when using a weed burner so that nearby plants are not damaged.
