The Effect of Low Temperatures on Plants

Low temperatures in spring can cause seedling growth to become checked, often accompanied by the development of a silvery sheen on their leaves. However, even worse than simple low temperatures, is a sudden, sharp frost, which can kill blossom, crack bark and twist leaves in the bud. Almost any plant can suffer from frost damage if conditions are harsh enough - even plants that are generally accepted as being hardy.

Control

Gardeners in areas prone to late frosts should consider growing late-flowering fruit varieties and hardy plants. Young and other vulnerable plants may be protected using polypropylene fleece or cloches, whilst trees and wall shrubs may be insulated using straw and hessian. Our section on understanding climate has some additional ideas on protecting your plants from frost.
