Planting Out

Vegetable seedlings raised in outdoor seedbeds should be transplanted to their final position when they are as young as possible so that they can continue to grow without further check. Plants grown indoors should be hardened off and transplanted when the soil reaches their optimum growth temperature.

Before transplanting, water around the roots of the seedlings and ensure that the ground that they are being planted into is moist. Make a hole in the soil, slightly larger that the seedling's roots, and then place the seedling into it. Make sure that you handle the plant by the leaves rather than the stem or the roots. The seedling should be positioned so that the lowest leaves are just above soil level. Firm the soil around the plant, and then water in well; keep the soil watered for 3-4 days after planting.
