Concrete & Mortar Recipes

The following recipes indicate the proportions for concrete and mortar mixes suitable for most projects; these proportions are measured by volume - not by weight.

Concrete (Medium Strength)

C20 (minimum compressive strength of 20N/mm²), suitable for paths, driveways and footings.

  • 1 part cement
  • 2 parts sharp sand
  • 4 parts 20 mm (3/4 in) aggregate

Alternatively, use 6 parts combined aggregate ('ballast') to 1 part cement, and omit the sand.

Contact with wet cement can damage skin and/or eyes. Always wear protective gloves before handling, and avoid contact with the eyes or uncovered skin.

Masonry Mortar

Use this for garden brickwork, pointing flags and everyday patching and repair jobs. It is important to note that masonry cement has additives that make it unsuitable for concrete.

  • 1 part masonry cement
  • 3 parts soft sand

Bedding Mortar

Use this for bedding paving for patios and light-use paths. Note that unlike masonry mortar, it is made with sharp sand instead of soft (builders') sand.

  • 1 part cement
  • 5 parts sharp sand

When mixing mortar or concrete, start by adding only about half a part of water to one part of mix, producing a very stiff mix. Add water gradually until you reach the consistency you need.

Dry Bedding Mortar

Use this for bedding paving or for jointing paving bricks. It is applied as a dried mix.

  • 1 part cement
  • 10 parts sharp sand
