Using an Archway Kit

Installing a simple metal arch kit is a quick and easy way of providing an archway for lightweight climbers such as honeysuckle, jasmine or clematis to clamber over.

Method

  1. Lightly oil the metal joints of the kit so that the pieces will slip together easily.
  2. Fit the pieces of the archway together first; use these to mark where the uprights need to be positioned on the ground.
  3. At each of these positions, hammer a metal rod into the ground to about 30 cm (12 in).
  4. Remove the metal rod and slide the upright into the hole.
  5. Fill any gaps in the hole with soil or finely crushed hardcore to keep the uprights secure.
  6. Fix the archway to the uprights.
  7. If you want to use the arch to support climbing plants, leave a 15-30 cm (6-12 in) gap between the post and the plant. Tie them securely (but not too tightly) to the posts.
