Using an Archway Kit
Installing a simple metal arch kit is a quick and easy way of providing an archway for lightweight climbers such as honeysuckle, jasmine or clematis to clamber over.
Method
- Lightly oil the metal joints of the kit so that the pieces will slip together easily.
- Fit the pieces of the archway together first; use these to mark where the uprights need to be positioned on the ground.
- At each of these positions, hammer a metal rod into the ground to about 30 cm (12 in).
- Remove the metal rod and slide the upright into the hole.
- Fill any gaps in the hole with soil or finely crushed hardcore to keep the uprights secure.
- Fix the archway to the uprights.
- If you want to use the arch to support climbing plants, leave a 15-30 cm (6-12 in) gap between the post and the plant. Tie them securely (but not too tightly) to the posts.
