Formal Planting

Formal planting is used to provide a simple, symmetrical and architectural theme, with precisely clipped dividing or boundary hedges. Formal beds, parterres or knots may be included, with controlled and well-balanced planting within the beds using limited shapes, colours and textures.

A considerable amount of discipline is required for both the design and maintenance of this style. If dividing up a large garden, you may decide to treat only one section in this way.
