Vernicia
Synonyms: Aleurites
Family: Euphorbiaceae
Common Name: Tung Oil Tree
This genus is now correctly Aleurites (see entry under Aleurites). The species below, V. fordii (Synonym: Aleurites fordii), is native to central Asia and is widely cultivated as a source of tung oil, which is used in paints and quick-drying varĂ‚Ânishes, but it is also grown as an ornamental. It is not easily available outside its country of origin.
Species
V. fardii (Synonym: Aleurites fordii) grows 8-10 m (26-33 ft) high and is evergreen. Its large, heart-shaped leaves may be lobed or entire on the margins. The funnel- or bell-shaped flowers are white to cream, with red to orange streaks in the throat, and appear in early to mid-spring. They are held above the foliage so are quite prominent. The large, rounded fruits, 4-5 cm (2 in) across, contain the poison. The large, rounded fruits are poisonous but rich in oil.
Cultivation
Grow in a sunny position, in well-drained, acid soil. Vernicia is tolerant of quite poor soil as long as drainage is good. Watering should be plentiful during the growing season, although established trees tolerate dry periods well. In frost-prone climates, grow as a young foliage plant in a cool to intermediate green-house or conservatory. Propagate from seed sown in warmth.
Climate
Zones 9 to 10 or tropical.
