Typha

Family: Typhaceae
Common Name: Cat Tail, Bulrush, Reedmace

These dozen or so species of hardy, herbaceous perennials are often found growing in swamps and marshes of tropical and temperate parts of the world. Often known as bulrushes, they are more correctly known as reedmaces. Their rush-like foliage is used in the making of baskets and woven chairs.

Species

T. angustifolia, lesser bulrush, grows to 2 m (6 ft), with narrow foliage and pale brown flower spikes, male and female being separated by a small section of stem.

T. latifolia, bulrush, cat tail, may grow over 2.5 m (8 ft). It has narrow foliage and dark brown flowers.

Cultivation

Typhas grow well at the edge of shallow water. Most are vigorous growers and they will spread quickly, so care should be taken to keep them under control, especially in warm climates. Cut off the flower heads before they dry out, to avoid unwanted spread. Propagate by dividing clumps in late winter or spring.
