Triteleia

Family: Amaryllidaceae

There are 15 species of cormous perennials in this genus from western North America. They have long, narrow, somewhat grassy foliage, and in summer, heads of trumpet-shaped flowers. They tolerate frost so can be grown in sunny border. Blooms last well as cut flowers.

Species

T. ixioides (Synonym: Brodiaea ixioides), golden brodiaea, has golden flowers, with darker markings down the petal centers and tooth-like filaments beyond the petals.

T. laxa (Synonym: Brodiaea laxa) has pale or deep violet flowers on stems to 50 cm (20 in) high. The one or two leaves grow to 30 cm (12 in). Cultivar 'Koningin Fabiola' (Synonym: 'Queen Fabiola'), bred in Europe, is probably the form most grown.

Cultivation

Triteleias are best planted in a light, well-drained soil in a warm, sunny position. Plant corms in autumn, about 8 cm (3 in) deep. Water plants as needed during growth. Propagate by dividing established clumps in the dormant season, or sow seed when ripe and germinate at 16°C (61°F).
