Tristaniopsis

Family: Myrtaceae

These 30 species of trees and shrubs are native to Southeast Asia and Australia. One species is grown in the sub-tropics and tropics as a street or garden tree, but in climates prone to frosts, it would need to be grown in a warm greenhouse or conservatory.

Species

Tristaniopsis laurina (Synonym: Tristania laurina), water gum, is a small tree found in coastal forests in eastern Australia. It can grow to 10-15 m (33-50 ft) high, but is often seen at around 8 m (26 ft). The leaves are slightly leathery, glossy green above and paler below. This tree has smooth, light brown bark which peels off in strips, and it produces clusters of showy, rich yellow flowers. In the plant's natural habitat, the flowers attract insects and birds as they are rich in nectar.

Cultivation

Under glass, grow in a pot of soil-based potting compost. Shade from direct, strong sun. Water well in the growing period, sparingly in winter. Outdoors grow in full sun or partial shade with deep, humus-rich soil. Propagate from seed sown in a warm propagating case.

Climate

Zone 10 or tropical.
