Strongylodon
Family: Papilionaceae
Common Name: Jade Vine
This genus of about 20 species of shrubs or climbers is found in Southeast Asia, with a number native to the Philippines. Only one species is grown, but this is not easy to obtain. It is among the most beautiful of all climbing plants.
Species
S. macrobotrys, jade vine or emerald creeper, is a strong-growing twining climber that may extend for 15 m (50 ft) or more in ideal conditions. The new leaves are bronze to pink, turning deep green as they mature. The long, pea-type flowers are massed in sprays that may be 40-80 cm (16-32 in) in length. The flowers are an exquisite shade of turquoise, and appear from late winter through spring.
Cultivation
Outside the tropics, grow in a warm greenhouse, in a large pot or tub of acid, soil-based potting compost. Even better, grow in a bed of acid soil. Shade from direct, strong sun, but ensure good light. A humid atmosphere is essential. The stems will need supports. If necessary, prune in late winter to control size. Propagate by air layering in spring, or from ripe seed sown as soon as available and germinated at 30°C (86°F).
Climate
Tropical.
