Stokesia
Family: Asteraceae
Common Name: Stokes' Aster
A native of south-eastern North America, this late-flowering perennial provides good cut flowers from late summer to autumn. It is easy to grow and looks its best in mass plantings. It is also suitable for container growing.
Species
S. laevis, the only species, is a perennial, 30-15 cm (12-18 in) high, which forms basal rosettes of narrow, divided leaves. Flower colours range from mauve through pink to purple. Cultivars are available in other colours, including white and rose pink.
Cultivation
Stokesias are excellent for mixed or herbaceous borders. They thrive in light, well-drained yet moist, acid soil in a sheltered, sunny position. Avoid wet or heavy soils. In areas with hard frosts, protect roots with a deep mulch over winter. Propagate by division in spring, from seed in autumn (germinate in a garden frame), or from root cuttings in winter.
