These 40 species of terrestrial orchids are generally found in mountainous regions of tropical Asia through to Australia and the Pacific. The genus name refers to the tongue-like shape of the lip.
Species
S. aurea has a leafless stem, to 60 cm (24 in) long, bearing golden yellow flowers with crimson spots at the lip.
S. plicata is a very variable species, growing in grassy low-lands in its habitat. The broad leaves are about 75 cm (30 in) long and the flowers, 3-4 cm (1-1½ in) across, are borne on long stems. They are usually a deep purple-pink shade and appear five or six at a time. In tropical climates, it blooms through most of the year.
Cultivation
Grow in pots of terrestrial orchid compost in a warm greenhouse. Water well in the growing season and shade from strong, direct sun. When growth has ceased and the pseudobulbs are fully developed, reduce watering.
