Senecio

Family: Asteraceae

This huge genus comprises over 1000 species, with a broad distribution throughout the world, and includes annuals, perennials, ever-green shrubs and climbers. They are variable in size, shape and habit. The daisy-like flowers, mostly in yellow but sometimes red, orange, blue or purple, are borne in clusters.

Species

S. articulatus, candle plant, from South Africa, is a succulent plant with jointed stems which take on red colours in sunlight. It has gray-green leaves and yellowish flowers rather like dandelions.

S. cruentus (Synonym: Pericallis cruenta), from the Canary Islands, is a perennial with purple flowers.

S. macroglossus, Cape or Natal ivy, is a twining climber from South Africa, with ivy-like leaves. There is also a variegated leaf form. The daisy-type flower heads are pale yellow.

S. petasitis, velvet geranium, is a shrub to 2.5 m (8 ft) high and 3 m (l0 ft) wide. The large, geranium-like leaves and stems are clothed in soft hairs. From late winter to spring, yellow flower heads appear on red stalks.

S. rowleyanus, string of beads, string of pearls or green beads, from Namibia, is a succulent with small, creamy flower heads. This species makes a good basket plant, as the bead-like leaves on long stems trail gracefully over the side.

S. serpens, blue chalk sticks, is a groundcovering succulent with fleshy, upright leaves. The stems and foliage are an unusual, intense shade of blue.

Cultivation

These plants need a reasonably fertile, well-drained soil, full sun and protection from frost. In frost-prone climates, grow tender species (including those listed) in a cool to intermediate, light, airy greenhouse or conservatory, in pots of well-drained, soil-based potting compost. Succulent species need to be grown in a large, shallow container so that their roots have a free run. Tip prune shrubby types regularly to encourage bushy growth. Propagate from cuttings.
