Sanchezia

Family: Acanthaceae

There are about 20 species in this genus of shrubs with origins in tropical America. They have opposite leaves and spikes or sprays of mostly colourful flowers, borne on stern tips or in the leaf axils. Outside the tropics, grow as pot plants in a warm conservatory or greenhouse.

Species

S. speciosa is the most frequently cultivated species. It is a bushy shrub, growing to a height and width of about 1.5 m (5 ft). The oval to lance-shaped leaves are bright green, with prominently marked veins of white, cream or yellow. Spikes of flowers appear mainly in summer. These are yellow with red bracts that often persist long after the flowers have fallen.

Cultivation

In the greenhouse, grow in pots of soil-based potting compost. Ensure plants have good light, but shade from direct, strong sun. Water normally when in full growth, far less in winter. Pruning may be needed in late winter to restrict size. Propagate from softwood cuttings in spring or semi-ripe cuttings in summer, rooting both in a heated propagating case.

Climate

Warmest parts of zone 10 to tropical.
