There are over 350 species in this large genus, found in a broad range of habitats in its native South Africa. These are succulent plants that bear shiny flowers resembling those of Mesembryanthemum or Lampranthus. They vary widely in size and shape, ranging from tiny clumps, with little foliage to huge, spreading mats of wiry stems, densely covered with fleshy leaves.
Species
R. acuminata is a shrubby species which can be upright or prostrate. It has oval, blueish-green leaves and light pink or white flowers.
R. dualis is a small, clump-forming plant, with thickened leaves and deep pink flowers.
R. evoluta is a mat-forming plant with blue-tinged leaves. The flowers are a most brilliant pink.
R. rubricaulis is a shrubby plant, with red stems and larger, mauve flowers.
Cultivation
In frost-prone areas, grow in pots of cactus compost in an intermediate greenhouse. Ensure maximum light and a dry atmosphere. Do not water plants in winter. Plants can be bedded out for the summer. Propagate in spring from seed germinated at 21°C (70°F) or from cuttings in summer.
