Rhoicissus

Family: Vitaceae
Common Name: Cape Grape

There are around ten species of evergreen climbers in this genus which originates from tropical and South Africa.

Species

R. capensis, Cape grape, has large leaves and produces clusters of edible, glossy, reddish purple fruits. This species climbs by means of tendrils and produces tubers. It is a very vigorous climber to about 5 m (16 ft) high and needs plenty of space to develop, but is amenable to pruning to keep it under control.

Cultivation

In frost-prone climates, grow as a house plant, or in an intermediate greenhouse or conservatory. Plants grow best in soil-based potting compost, with maximum light, but shade from direct strong sun. Keep only slightly moist in winter, but water normally at other times. Outdoors grow in a warm, sunny, sheltered spot with moist yet well-drained soil. Provide supports for stems and prune in spring to keep plants within bounds, if necessary. Propagate from semi-ripe cuttings in summer, with basal warmth.

Climate

Zone 10 to tropical.
