Rhoeo
Synonyms: Tradescantia
Family: Commelinaceae
Common Name: Moses in the basket
Botanists have now placed species from this genus into Tradescantia (see entry at Tradescantia) but most people still know this plant as Rtraeo. It is a fleshy perennial from central America that is grown in an intermediate greenhouse or conservatory, or as a house plant, in frost-prone climates.
Species
R. spathacea (Synonym: Tradescantia spathacea) is an evergreen plant grown for its attractive dark green foliage, coloured bright purple on the underside. The upright, linear leaves are 30 cm (12 in) long and 5 cm (2 in) wide. The insignificant, white flowers emerge from small, boat-like structures at the base of the leaves. Cultivar 'Vittata' has leaves striped longitudinally with pale yellow.
Cultivation
In the greenhouse or home, grow in pots of soilless potting compost. Plants need good light (but shade from direct sun), and a humid atmosphere. Carry out normal watering in the growing season but keep only just moist in winter. Cut out tips of shoots to encourage a bushy habit. Propagate in spring or summer from cuttings obtained from the tops of the stems, and root them in warmth.
