Botanists have now put this genus into Hatiora (see entry at Hatiora). The species described here include the Easter cactus. Epiphytic cactuses from Brazil, they have flat, segmented stems and somewhat trumpet-shaped, brightly coloured flowers.

Species

R. gaertneri, (Synonym: Hatiora gaertneri), Easter cactus, has flattened joints, 2-8 cm (0.5-3 in) long, and bright red, spring flowers.

R. rosea (Synonym: Hatiora rosea) has long-lasting, pink flowers in spring, followed by four-sided fruits. Most plants in cultivation are hybrids.

Cultivation

Grow in a warm greenhouse or conservatory, in hanging baskets, or mounted on a tree branch. Fill containers with either orchid compost or cactus compost formulated for epiphytes. Plants need good light (but shade from direct sun), and a humid atmosphere (mist spray daily). In winter, keep the compost only barely moist. Propagate from cuttings in summer.
