Reseda
Family: Resedaceae
Mignonette
The 55 species of this genus of mostly small perennials and annuals are from Europe, and in particular, the Mediterranean. The genus contains species used since earliest times for dyes and essential oils. The flowers are not showy, but are sweetly perfumed.
Species
R. lutea, wild mignonette, is an annual or perennial growing to 50 cm (20 in), and R. luteola, dyer's rocket or weld, is a biennial to 1.75 m (6 ft); both are sources of yellow dye. They were used by the ancient Romans and have been cultivated for centuries as dye plants.
R. odorata, mignonette, is an annual, 30-60 cm (12-24 in) high. The highly fragrant, but unspectacular flowers are green and pink. It has long been cultivated for oil for use in perfumery. There are red- and yellow-flowered forms that are showier, but lack the fragrance.
Cultivation
Grow in well-drained soil, in sun or part shade. In warm climates, sow in autumn; in cool areas, spring sowing is best. Give regular water in the growing season.
