Poncirus
Family: Rutaceae
Closely related to Citrus, this single-species genus is originally from China, but widely grown in Japan and often used as hedging in some countries. It is also used as a rootstock for cultivated citrus.
Species
P. trifoliata is a fast-growing, deciduous shrub or small tree with flattened stems, long, stout spines and trifoliate leaves with winged leaf stalks. The fragrant, white, five-petalled flowers appear just before new spring growth and they are followed by the fragrant, round, yellow fruit which is not usually eaten.
Cultivation
This shrub or small tree will adapt to any ordinary, well-drained soil. It needs a sheltered position with full sun. If it is grown as a hedge, trim after flowering, but not too hard or fruits will be lost. Propagate from seed in autumn in a garden frame, or from semi-ripe cuttings in summer, in a heated propagating case.
