This genus consists of over 50 species of hardy herbaceous perennialso found in many temper-ate regions of the world. P. biflorum and P. odoratum are the two most commonly cultivated, and these are valued for their graceful, leafy stems and white blossoms. These are superb plants for moist woodland gardens and shrub borders.

Species

P. biflorum, to 1 m (3 ft) or more, produces green and white flowers in late spring and summer.

P. odoratum flowers towards the end of spring and into early summer, producing white, green tipped, scented flowers on stems at least 80cm high. There is a cultivar with white-edged leaves called 'Variegatum'.

P. multiflorum, to 90 cm (36 in), has similar flowers, again in late spring.

Cultivation

Polygonatum needs a moisture-retentive, yet well-drained soil, well supplied with humus, and a position in sun or semi-shade. Propagate by division in spring.

Climate

Best in cool, moist climates.
