Polygala

Family: Polygalaceae
Common Name: Milkwort

This large genus of some 500 species of trees, shrubs, annuals and herbaceous perennials are indigenous to most regions of the world. Few species, however, are in general cultivation.

Species

P. calcarea, zone 7, is a prostrate, ever-green perennial, with a creeping habit. The flowers are mainly blue, but may also be white.

P. chamaebuxus, zone 6, grows to only 10 cm (4 in), with sprays of tiny, yellow, pea-like flowers, in spring and early summer.

P. x dalmaisiana, zone 9, is an evergreen shrub to 2.5 m (8 ft) with purple or rose-magenta flowers in summer and autumn.

P. myrtifolia, zone 9, to 2 m (6 ft), bears green-white, purple-veined flowers, from spring to autumn.

P. paucifolia, zone 2, is a shrubby, low-growing species, to 15-18 cm (6-7 in) high, which produces pinkish purple flowers. It is suitable for growing in rockeries.

P. vayredae, zone 6, from Spain, grows to 20 cm (8 in) and has purplish flowers.

Cultivation

These plants will grow in most soils and conditions, but generally do best in full sun, with ample water. Propagate from cuttings, seeds or suckers.
