Plumeria

Family: Apocynaceae
Common Name: Frangipani

Originally from Central America, this genus consists of seven species of trees, the scent of which is unforgettable. In frost-prone climates, it is a good subject for the warm greenhouse or conservatory. The frangipani is a symbol of eternity for Buddhists because branches continue to flower even when cut.

Species

P. rubra var. acutifolia, from Mexico, is more commonly grown than the species. The white flowers have yellow markings on the throat and a deliciously sweet perfume. The form lutea has yellow flowers but the outside is often flushed light red. Many hybrids have been produced in a range of colours, some of which may have been spontaneous hybrids.

Cultivation

In the conservatory or greenhouse, grow in pots of sandy, soil-based potting compost. Ensure maximum light, but shade from strong sun. Keep the compost only slightly moist in winter, but water well at other times. Propagate from stem-tip cuttings in early spring.

Climate

Tropical only.
