Plumbago
Family: Plumbaginaceae
Common Name: Leadwort
Of this genus of 15 species of shrubs, climbers, perennials or annuals, native to tropical and warm regions of the world, only a few are in general cultivation. They make good cool to intermediate conservatory plants in frost-prone climates.
Species
P. auriculata, from South Africa, is a semi-climbing shrub bearing spikes of sky blue flowers at the ends of its trailing stems, throughout summer into autumn. Growing vigorously in warm climates, to 3 m (10 ft) high, it also has a less rampant, white-flowered form.
Cultivation
In the conservatory, grow in pots of soil-based potting compost in good light, but shade from direct sun. In the garden, grow in a sunny, sheltered spot with well-drained soil. Prune climbers in late winter by cutting back side shoots to within three buds of the main stems. Propagate from semi-ripe cuttings in summer.
Climate
Warmest parts of zone 9 at least.
