From China and japan, this is a single-species genus of perennials, suitable for growing in borders or clusters. The dwarf varieties look attractive in rockeries.

Species

P. grandiflorus, balloon flower, grows to 60 cm (24 in) high, producing balloon-like buds that open to purple-blue, bell-shaped flowers, during late summer. The serrated leaves are an attractive blueish green colour. Many lovely cultivars are available.

Cultivation

Platycodon needs a rich, fertile soil and a sunny position. It con be grown from seed or cuttings, or by division of the clumps, which is best carried out in spring.
