Nutmeg

Myristica fragrans
Family: Myristicaceae

There are more than 100 species of Myristica, extending through parts of Southeast Asia and into Australia. However, Myristica fragrans is the only species common in cultivation and both nutmeg and mace come from this large tree which is native to the Moluccas. It may grow 15-18 m (50-60 ft) tall. Male and female flowers are carried on separate trees, one male tree being planted in commercial plantations to pollinate about ten female trees. The fruit at maturity is fleshy and pale yellow and splits to reveal a fleshy, red covering, mace, enclosing the woody seed, nutmeg. Nutmeg is dried and sold whole for grating or in powdered form. It is used for flavoring both savory and sweet dishes. Most commercial production is in Indonesia and parts of the West Indies.

Cultivation

Nutmeg trees can be grown outside only in tropical climates. Elsewhere, they can be grown as young foliage plants in pots in a warm greenhouse, but plants may not be available outside the tropics. Use a soil-based potting compost. Shade from direct sun. Propagate from seed sown when available in a warm propagating case.

Climate

Suitable for tropical regions only.
