Nerine

Family: Amaryllidaceae

There are about 30 species in this genus of bulbous plants from South Africa. The attractive, spider-like flowers borne at the end of long stems appear in autumn in colours ranging from white through various shades of pink to deep crimson and scarlet. The leaves are strap-like.

Species

N. bowdenii grows to about 30 cm (12 in), with rose pink flowers.

N. filifolia has fine, grass-like foliage that grows 15-20 cm (6-8 in) high and delicate, little, pink or white flowers in autumn.

N. 'Fothergillii Major' is a vigorous grower, to 60 cm (24 in), with large, bright scarlet flowers in autumn.

N. flexuosa has pale pink flowers, and grows to 50 cm (20 in). Cultivar 'Alba' has white flowers.

N. masonorum grows to only 20 cm (8 in), producing rose-pink flowers with darker stripes.

N. sarniensis, Guernsey lily, is a delightful species, to 40 cm (16 in), bearing trumpet-shaped flowers with prominent stamens in colours from pink to rose, crimson and scarlet.

Cultivation

These plants need perfect drainage and a hot, sunny position. Plant bulbs with their necks above ground during late summer or early autumn. Water while plants are in active growth, but keep dry during dormancy. Nerines will flower best if undisturbed. In frost-prone climates, grow tender species in a cool, airy greenhouse, in pots of soil-based potting compost.

Climate

Zone 9, but zone 8 for N. bowdenii.
