Nemesia

Family: Scrophulariaceae

Comprising over 60 species of annual and perennial, herbaceous plants and subshrubs from tropical and South Africa, Nemesia gives colour to rockeries, borders and window boxes.

Species

N. strumosa, an annual, grows to 40 cm (16 in) high and produces an abundance of brightly coloured flowers, borne in terminal sprays, throughout summer. There are numerous cultivars available, including some in a wide range of bright, mixed colours. Those with bicoloured flowers are also recommended, such as the blue and white 'KLM', and 'Mello Red and White' (colour as name).

N. versicolor is an annual species with a large colour range and both tall and dwarf forms.

Cultivation

The annuals, which are often grown for summer bedding, are raised from seed sown in spring under glass. Germinate at 15°C (59°F). Plant out after frosts, in a sunny spot with well-drained soil. They are best in slightly acid soil which retains moisture. They need shelter from strong winds. Keep well watered in dry summer periods to maintain the flower display.

Climate

Zone 9, but grown as summer annuals in all climate zones.
