Molucella
Family: Labiatae
One of the four species is thought to have originated from the Moluccas, hence the genus name. These attractive, soft-wooded annuals produce 60 cm (24 in) long spikes of light green, bell-shaped calyces enclosing the tiny, white flowers. They are long lasting and also useful in dried arrangements.
Species
M. laevis, bells of Ireland, grows to around 1 m (3 ft), and has distinctive, shell-like calyces. M. spinosa, growing to 1 m (3 ft), has spined calyces.
Cultivation
Molucellas do well in any soil, provided they are planted in a warm spot and are well watered. Sow seed in early spring under glass or in late spring in flowering position. Space plants 30 cm (12 in) apart each way.
