Knightia
Family: Proteaceae
Common Name: Maori Honeysuckle, Rewarewa
Native to New Zealand, this tall, columnar tree grows 12-20 m (40-65 ft) high. The trees yield a fine timber and appear to have some fire-resistance.
Species
K. excelsa has long, leathery, toothed leaves, dense sprays of bisexual, deep reddish brown, summer flowers which attract birds, and winged seeds. It is grown for its timber, used in cabinet-making, and its beautiful flowÂers, which generally take several years to appear.
Cultivation
The only species cultivated, K. excelsa prefers a well-drained soil and will tolerate fairly dry conditions. In climates prone to frost, grow in a cool greenhouse. Propagate from seed sown in spring.
Climate
Warmer parts of zone 9.
