Kaempferla

Family: Zingiberaceae

The 50 species of rhizomatous perennials in this genus are native to India, southern China and Southeast Asia. They grow in forests as understorey plants. Some are used as flavorings and spices, as well as for scent and medicine. The foliage is attractive, marked or marbled in contrasting colours. Flowers may be pink, white or lilac. These plants die back completely in winter. Except in tropical climates, they are grown in a warm greenhouse or conservatory. Some spread rapidly, so are best confined to pots.

Species

K. galanga has rather horizontal foliage, to 15 cm (6 in) long, and fragrant, white flowers spotted with violet at the base. It is grown for its rhizome which is used as a flavoring in Asian dishes as well as for its scent.

K. pulchra grows up to 15 cm (6 in), with dense, prettily marked foliage and simple, pale lilac flowers in summer.

K. rotunda, Resurrection lily, also grows to about 15 cm (6 in). The leaves are silvery green above and purple beneath. Small spikes of white flowers with lilac tips appear in summer.

Cultivation

These are best grown in soil-based potting compost in large pots or tubs. They need good light but should be shaded from direct sun. When the plants are growing, pro-vide a humid atmosphere and water well. When they are dormant in winter, do not water the plants. Propagate by division in spring.

Climate

Tropical regions.
