Jackfruit
Artocarpus heterophyllus
Family: Moraceae
This is a fast-growing, tropical tree which may reach 15 m (50 ft) in three to five years. It bears huge, edible fruits, up to 90 cm (36 in) long in ideal conditions. 'fhe fruit is eaten raw or cooked, but the ripe fruits and the flowers have a strong, unpleasant odor typical of plants polÂlinated by flies. The timber is used for quality furniture. Originally native to India and Malaysia, it has now spread to most tropical areas.
Cultivation
Outside the tropics, grow in a warm, humid greenhouse or conservatory, in large pots or tubs of soil-based potting compost. It is unlikely to fruit when thus grown. Propagate from root suckers or semi-ripe cuttings.
