Hymenosporum

Family: Pittosporaceae
Common Name: Australian Frangipani

The only species of this genus from the rain-forests of tropical Australia is grown for its attractive, large, crearnish yellow flowers and layered branching habit. In frost-prone climates, it makes a good subject for the intermediate conservatory, while outdoors, in the right climate, it can be planted as a specimen tree.

Species

H. flavum, to 15 m (50 ft), is a fast-growing evergreen with glossy, bright green leaves. This tree is splendid in early summer with clusters of fragrant, tubular, cream flowers maturing to a rich yellow. These are followed by flat seed pods.

Cultivation

Under glass, grow Australian frangipani in soil-based potting compost, with maximum light but shade from direct sun, and in airy conditions. Outdoors, a position in full sun is needed, plus well-drained soil containing plenty of humus. Propagate from seed in spring or semi-ripe cuttings in summer, both with basal warmth.

Climate

Warmer parts of zone 9.
