Hicksbeachia
Family: Proteaceae
Common Name: Monkey Nut
Of these two species of trees native to north and east Australia, only one is in cultivation. However, it is unlikely to be available in the UK.
Species
H. pinnatifolia, monkey nut, is native to rainforests of eastern Australia. Growing to 10 m (33 ft), it has handsome, large, lobed leaves and sprays of creamy yellow flowers in summer. These are followed by red, oval-shaped, edible 'nuts'.
Cultivation
In frost-prone climates, grow as a young foliage plant in an intermediate green-house or conservatory. It adapts well to pot culÂture. Use soil-based potting compost and water well in the growing period. Outdoors it needs well drained, humus-rich soil and a sunny spot.
