This small, Australian native genus has one species which is especially lovely and makes a pretty rock garden or pot specimen.

Species

H. pungens generally grows 60-90 cm (24-36 in), but is often a prostrate or cascading plant. It has small, narrow, bright green leaves and a profusion of delightful, large, pinkish mauve flowers with bright pink spots on the throat in spring.

Cultivation

Propagate from seed or by cuttings of half-ripe, young growth struck in a sharp sand and peat mix of about 3:1. Pot up in a well-drained, sandy loam mix. Plant out in a sunny position, with protection from wind.

Climate

Grows in warmer parts of zone 9.
