Hedycarya
Family: Monimiaceae
Common Name: Native Mulberry
These small, evergreen trees and shrubs are native to Australia and New Zealand. They are rarely available outside their native countries.
Species
H. angustifolia, Austral mulberry, is a native of eastern Australia and grows 3-6 m (10-20 ft) in height. It has thin, shiny, light green leaves and insignificant, pale-coloured flowers. It produces small, attractive, red or yellow fruits that resemble mulberries.
H. arborea, from New Zealand, is similar, with bright red berry fruits. It grows to 5-10 m (16-33 ft) high.
Cultivation
Outdoors, these trees need moist soil and shelter from wind. When young they require partial shade. In frost-prone climates, grow in a cool, airy greenhouse or conservatory.
