Native to Europe, Asia, Australia and America, this genus consists of 20 species of temperate and subtropical perennial herbs grown for the juice from its roots, used in the production of licorice.
Species
G. glabra, licorice plant, has a some-what straggly habit, growing to a height and spread of 1 m (3 ft). It has large, mid-green leaves and blue or violet, pea-like flowers on short, erect spikes in summer.
Cultivation
Plant in a rich soil, deep enough for the large root system, in a sunny position. Cut down each year after flowering. The roots are ready for harvesting after three years. Propagate by division in early spring, or from seed sown in pots in autumn or spring.
