This genus consists of about a dozen species but only one is grown-a creeping, hardy perennial from Europe which makes an excellent ground-cover or hanging basket specimen. The varie­gated form is particularly attractive.

Species

G. hederacea is a sturdy plant found growing naturally in damp woodlands. Considered a weed in some regions, it can become invasive. It has heart-shaped leaves and short spikes of lilac-blue or occasionally pink flowers in summer. The cultivar 'Variegata' is marked with a silvery white colour.

Cultivation

These tough, trailing plants can be used on dry banks or slopes, or as an under-shrub cover. Propagate by division in spring or from cuttings in late spring. Grow in full sun or partial shade. Provide plenty of water during dry summers.
