Native to Australia and New Zealand, this genus consists of about 48 species of shrubs and trees, generally with sharply pointed, stem-clasping leaves and dense spikes of tubular flowers on one side of the stem.
Species
D. longifolium, from New Zealand, is a large shrub or tree to 10 m (33 ft). It has dark green, leathery leaves, sometimes shaded with red, and sprays of white flowers.
D. paludoÂsum, to 2 m (6 ft), has spikes of white flowers in summer.
D. secundum, necklace heath, from New South Wales, is a trailing plant, with spikes of white flowers.
Cultivation
Dracophyllurn likes cool, shady conditions and moisture. Propagate from root cuttings in spring. Strike in sharp sand and repot with minimal disturbance. It tolerates pruning. In frosty climates, grow in a cool green house.
