Delonix

Family: Caesalpiniaceae
Common Name: Poinciana, Flamboyant Tree

This magnificent tree, native to Madagascar, is one of the most beautiful flowering trees in the world. Only one species is cultivated. Used as a street tree in the tropics, it makes an outstanding specimen tree for home gardens or parks.

Species

D. regia is a partly deciduous tree growing to only around 12 m (40 ft) high, but at times its umbrella-like canopy is as wide, or even wider across. It is the most stunning tree when the masses of superb, showy, scarlet-orange flowers bloom in summer amongst the beautiful, feathery foliage. The flowers are followed by flat, woody pods about 50 cm (20 in) long.

Cultivation

In frost-prone climates, poinciana is grown in an intermediate greenhouse or conservatory but only as a foliage plant as it does not flower in pots or tubs. Use a soil-based potting compost, and provide maximum light. In gardens in the right climate, Delonix needs a sheltered position in full sun and well-drained soil. Propagate from seed sown in spring. Germinate in a temperature of 21°C (70°F).

Climate

At least zone 10.
