The leaves of this tropical genus are either opposite or whorled and the large, tubular, red or yellow flowers are borne profusely in bracted spikes. In cool and cold climates, grow in pots or tubs in a warm greenhouse or conservatory.
Species
C. infundibuliformis is a shrubby plant growing to 1 m (3 ft), with spikes of fan-shaped, orange or orange-pink flowers which may appear at any time during the year.
Cultivation
Under glass, grow in pots of soil-based or soilless potting compost. Provide maximum light but shade from strong sun. Ensure a humid atmosphere. Propagate from semi-ripe cuttings in summer. Pinch out growing tips of young plants to ensure bushy specimens.
