Combretum
Family: Combretaceae
Of this extremely varied genus of tropical evergreen trees and shrubs, many are climbers. The flowers are unusual, opening from spikes of clustered, round buds to brush-type blooms, somewhat similar to those of the bottlebrush (Callistemon spp). The medium-sized leaves are oval in shape and can be very decorative in themselves.
Species
C. erythrophyllum, bush willow, is a shapely tree to 12 m (40 ft). The leaves turn red or orange in autumn and winter and the flowers are a greenish white colour.
C. loeflengi is a shrubby climber to 1.5 m (5 ft) with orange and green flowers.
C. paniculatum is a tall, prickly vine with large sprays of coral red flowers, often borne before the leaves, and pink or orange fruit, around 4 cm (1½ in) in diameter.
Cultivation
Grow in a warm conservatory or greenhouse in frost-prone climates, in a tub or large pot of soilless compost. These plants need bright light and a moderately humid atmosphere. After they have flowered, cut back the side shoots to three or four buds. Provide supports for the stems.
