Colvillea

Family: Caesalpiniaceae

A single-species genus, native to Madagascar, this evergreen tree is sometimes grown as a specimen in tropical areas to display its showy flowers.

Species

C. racemosa is an upright-growing tree, 8-15 m (26-50 ft) tall, with feathery foliage on its wide-spreading branches. It has orange-scarlet flowers in long sprays through late autumn to winter.

Cultivation

In frost-prone climates, grow in an intermediate greenhouse or conservatory. It needs bright light and shade from direct sun, and a moderately humid atmosphere. Outdoors, grow in full sun in humus-rich soil which drains freely. Water regularly throughout the growing season, with only very occasional waterings during winter.

Climate

Warmest parts of zone 10.
